HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Hawaii will soon have a high school surfing state championship tournament.

Gov. Josh Green shared new details for the upcoming high school surfing season Monday alongside guests that included five-time World Surf League champion and Olympic gold medalist Carissa Moore.

“Surfing is a very individual sport,” Moore said. “I think this team aspect is so important and something that I missed out on as a young person.”

After originally planning to only offer shortboard competition, they announced on Monday that bodyboarding and longboarding will also be part of the schedule.

The season starts mid-February with the two-day inaugural state tournament set for May.
