FAIRFAX, Va. — A Lorton man faces decades in prison after he was convicted of murdering his girlfriend in April 2024.

According to Commonwealth’s Attorney Steve Descano, a jury found 48-year-old Huy Tien “Max” Nguyen guilty of second-degree murder for killing 38-year-old Alison “Kate” LaPorta.

Nguyen had been dating LaPorta for a year when he drove her to Mount Vernon Hospital on April 17, 2024, for gunshot injuries. She was later transferred to Fairfax Hospital, where she died.

Nguyen claimed LaPorta had shot herself with his gun; however, evidence such as the trajectory of the bullet and a photo of the gun's imprint on LaPorta's seatbelt showed Nguyen had actually pulled the trigger while sitting in her car.
