KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — More than 40 years after legendary Tennessee Lady Vols coach Pat Summitt coached the United States Women's National Team to its first gold medal, another Lady Vol has been chosen to lead Team USA.
USA Basketball announced Monday that Kara Lawson, an Olympic gold medalist and two-time All-American at Tennessee, has been named the head coach of women's national team. She will lead the United States at the 2026 FIBA Women’s World Cup in Berlin and the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.
Lawson has been the head coach of the Duke University women’s basketball team since 2020, guiding the Blue Devils to an ACC tournament title and an NCAA Elite Eight run last season. She won Olympic gold as a player in 2008 and served as an assistant coach when USA topped the podium
