OMAHA, Neb. —

A new executive action signed by President Trump requires a dramatic increase in the annual application fee for the H-1B visa to $100,000.

It's designed to allow highly educated and skilled foreign workers to work in the United States, especially in industries where there are labor shortages.

“This is not economically sound policy,” said Dr. Ernie Goss, a Creighton University economist.

Immigration attorney Julia Cryne explained that the program isn’t intended to displace American workers but to address labor gaps in areas such as the STEM industry.

“H-1B workers have never really been replacing American workers,” Cryne said. “They're there to fill gaps in the system where they cannot find workers for the types of jobs that those need.”
