ESPAÑOLA, N.M. (KRQE) – With a population of 10,500 people, Española has struggled with crime and drugs over the years, and after a state of emergency was declared in August, will the New Mexico National Guard be sent there to help fight crime?

"This is just a regular day in Española. It's ridiculous," said one lawmaker during the Courts, Corrections, and Justice Committee hearing. The lawmaker shared her firsthand experience of her family's cars being broken into and stolen, and seeing needles throughout the city.

"It's not a secret. We've had a generational historical issue with the drug crisis," said Chief Mizel Garcia, City of Española.
