Kolkata faced severe disruptions on Tuesday due to very heavy rainfall that caused widespread flooding across the city and its suburbs. The downpour, which began after midnight, led to waterlogging on roads, affecting traffic and public transport significantly. Train and Metro services were particularly hard hit, with officials reporting that tracks were submerged in water.

The Metro Railway suspended services between Shahid Khudiram and Maidan stations for safety reasons, while truncated services continued between Dakshineswar and Maidan. In the Sealdah south section, train movement was halted, and only limited services were operational in the north and main sections. The Circular Railway also faced disruptions due to waterlogging at Chitpur yard.

Many residential areas experienced flooding, with water entering homes and complexes. The Kolkata Municipal Corporation reported that Garia Kamdahari received 332 mm of rain, followed by Jodhpur Park with 285 mm, and Kalighat with 280 mm. Other areas like Topsia, Ballygunge, and Thantania also recorded significant rainfall.

In response to the adverse weather, several schools declared holidays, and office-goers struggled to reach their workplaces due to the lack of public transport and heavy traffic jams. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of more rain in the coming days, as a low-pressure area over the northeast Bay of Bengal is expected to bring additional heavy showers to several districts in south Bengal.

The situation is compounded by another low-pressure area anticipated to form over the east-central and adjoining north Bay of Bengal around September 25, which could lead to further rainfall until September 28.
