Kolkata witnessed incessant rainfall from midnight into the early hours of Tuesday, resulting in flooding across many parts of the city. At least seven people have died due to electrocution, as the downpour brought life in the metropolis to a grinding halt.

The IMD’s Alipore observatory reported 247.4 mm of rain until 6:30 AM, the third-highest ever recorded in September. The three-hourly rainfall over Alipore (Kolkata) totalled around 251.4 mm in the last 24 hours, from 8:30 AM on 22nd September to 8:30 AM on 23rd September 2025.

The highest rainfall of 369 mm was recorded on 28th September 1978, according to IMD data, marking the highest ever for the region. It is also the third-highest 24-hour rainfall, representing a short, intense spell of rain within 3-4 hours.
