Weapons director Zach Cregger has confirmed that he's working on a prequel focused on the evil character Aunt Gladys. The Barbarian filmmaker's new horror tells the story of a fictional Pennsylvania community who are rocked by the disappearance of 17 schoolchildren, who all woke up at the same time and mysteriously fled their homes in the middle of the night. Shortly after the film's success at the box office last month, reports emerged that Cregger was working on a prequel about Amy Madigan's witch Aunt Gladys, and Cregger has now confirmed they are true. "It is real and I've been talking to Warner Bros. about it," Cregger told Fangoria. "There's a story and I'm pretty excited about it. It's not bulls**t." He added that he was already working on the idea before Weapons became a box office smash, grossing more than $260 million (£192 million) worldwide. "I was ready," Cregger declared. "I had it kind of in my pocket before the movie came out." It is unclear exactly when Cregger will make his Weapons prequel, as he is currently directing a reboot of the Resident Evil video game adaptations and has written a script for a sci-fi titled Flood. During an interview with Vanity Fair last month, Cregger divulged details about Aunt Gladys's origin story. He revealed that he presented Madigan with two options: her character was a regular person who turned to dark magic for survival, or a creature pretending to be human. "I presented Amy with two options of her origin story. I was like, 'You can pick one of these two,'" Cregger shared. "They're very different options. And was like, 'You don't have to tell me, but it is either this or that.' I don't know which one she picked." Weapons also starred Julia Garner, Josh Brolin, Benedict Wong, Austin Abrams and Alden Ehrenreich.
