During a surprise inspection, the Kumaon commissioner Deepak Rawat found that a senior Haldwani Tehsil officer kept files and registers at his home instead of his office and filed reports from home instead of visiting the sites. The tehsildar accompanied Rawat during the inspection the objective of which was to investigate the complaints filed against the officer.

Notably, the Kanungo had been embroiled in controversy in the past, too.

The commissioner ordered the Nainital district magistrate to conduct an administrative inquiry into the matter and take strict action.
