(FOX 5/KUSI) — The North County Transit District is celebrating a milestone this year and introducing several ways to mark its 50 years in operation this month.

The agency began operations on September 20, 1975 and was created to manage public transportation in northern San Diego County.

It began by consolidating several bus systems operating in certain cities and has since introduced the COASTER and SPRINTER trains, BREEZE buses and NCTD+ shuttles that transport passengers throughout the area.

The agency is also now operating under the name North County Transit - San Diego Railroad.

As part of its 50 years in service, the agency announced a redesigned SPRINTER vehicle, new logo and pop-up events at certain stations the week of Sept. 23-27.
