A partial shutdown of the U.S. government will happen on October 1, unless Congress passes legislation, a Continuing Resolution (CR), to extend current year funding into the 2026 fiscal year. Negotiations in Congress are currently stalled, with Republicans and Democrats unable to agree on a path forward.

Each year, Congress is responsible for passing 12 appropriations bills to fund the government for the next fiscal year. When these bills are not passed on time, a government shutdown occurs. To avert a shutdown, Congress can pass a CR to temporarily fund the government by extending the funding authorizations of the previous year, but lawmakers in both parties have been unable so far to reach an agreement on the terms of a CR.
