NEW JERSEY (PIX11) – The battle to become the next New Jersey governor is already the most expensive in state history – and someone’s got to oversee all that cash.
Combined spending by the gubernatorial candidates has topped $145 million, according to the New Jersey Election Law Enforcement Commission. The state’s previous most expensive election was in 2005, when candidates and donors spent $98 million and voters elected Democrat Jon Corzine.
The New Jersey Election Law Enforcement Commission (ELEC), comprised of four governor-appointed members, is tasked with making sure lobbyists, candidates and donors are following state election law, such as publicly disclosing personal and campaign finances.
