The Scottish SPCA rescued almost 40,000 animals last year. ‌

The animal welfare charity took in 37,214 animals – an average of over 100 per day – in 2024, many of them suffering from abuse and neglect. ‌

Last autumn it also experienced the “largest single intake” of animals since it was founded 185 years ago, with 216 puppies and dogs rescued across Scotland in just 10 days. ‌

Some were just days old and many more were born in their care.

And amid the ongoing cost-of-living crisis 4779 owners contacted it seeking advice about surrendering their pets – up almost a quarter on the previous year. ‌
