Community members gathered Monday night to remember and honor a high school student who died in a crash in Santa Clara over the weekend.

Isaiah Mendoza, a 16-year-old student at Wilcox High School, was killed in a two-car crash on Saturday night.

Mendoza was driving northbound on Lawrence Expressway near Benton Street when he lost control of the car, hit another car and then crashed into a pole. He died at the scene. Police said speed may have been a factor.

Two teenage passengers and the teenage driver of the other car were hurt but are expected to be OK.

Mendoza was a junior at Wilcox, where he played varsity baseball and soccer. He had just turned 16 and recently got his driver’s license, his grandfather said, adding that he was loved by everyone and found a friend in just about eve
