Former Eagles safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson was released by the Houston Texans on Monday, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.
The Eagles traded Gardner-Johnson, who was a key starter on their championship defense last season, to the Texans in March for guard Kenyon Green and a swap of Day-3 picks in 2026.
Gardner-Johnson snagged six interceptions and amassed 59 tackles in 2024. During his previous stint with the Eagles in 2022, he also finished with six picks.
The Eagles claimed the Gardner-Johnson trade was made for financial reasons, but it was surprising to see them move on from one of the league’s best defensive playmakers.
It’s even more shocking that the Texans released Gardner-Johnson, who made $7.3 million in three games for his new organization.
