In early August, Bemidji High School senior Austin Riewer had never kicked a football competitively. By the end of August, he was kicking in the Lumberjacks’ biggest game of the year against the defending state champions.
The BHS season opener on Aug. 28 against Elk River was Riewer’s first football game for the Jacks, a 50-42 loss that was an offensive shootout. Both teams went for two-point conversions almost every time they scored.
It certainly made Riewer’s job easier. He was 2 for 3 on extra points before two-point conversions were the norm throughout the game. All he had to do was handle kickoffs, of which there were plenty.
But it wasn’t the only game he played that day.
