Toledo-Lucas County Public Library will begin issuing enhanced library cards early next year, which residents can use as a photo ID for certain programs within the city and county.

Enhanced library cards, available at the main branch downtown, will cost $5 and require identity verification and documentation of county residency.

They will give residents who are unable to obtain a driver’s license or state ID “the opportunity to leverage an additional form of personal ID ... to receive local services or engage in programs,” according to the library.

The card will not, however, replace a government-issued ID for some services, and acceptance is up to each individual organization. City and county departments that focus on community relations are in the beginning stages of recruiting partne
