MUSKEGON, Mich. — A new residential development with up to 220 single-family homes has been proposed for the site of the old SAPPI Paper Mill on Muskegon Lake's south shore, despite ongoing environmental concerns, including PFAS contamination in the groundwater.

The proposed development at 2400 Lakeshore Drive would use specialized "podium style construction," which involves building structures 24 inches above grade to "mitigate potential vapor intrusion and fire and explosion risks caused by methane in the interior portions of the proposed buildings," according to EGLE.
