The Oklahoma Pardon and Parole Board's executive director, Tom Bates, is resigning after five years in the high-stress position.

Bates, 56, leaves Nov. 30.

In his Sept. 22 resignation letter, he pointed to his work guiding the board in deciding the fate of death row inmates after the state resumed executions in 2021 .
