Mayor Bruce Harrell’s proposed 2026 budget includes more than $40 million in additional spending for the Seattle Police Department, as officer hiring significantly overperformed expectations and Harrell seeks to make good on his top campaign promise.

The funding increase, one piece of a nearly $9 billion city budget proposed by Harrell on Tuesday, comes as other departments citywide are asked to tighten their belts.

“With a focus on proven solutions for the challenges of today — from affordability and homelessness to accessible food and child care — this budget will keep Seattle on a positive trajectory and protect our residents from the chaos and disinvestments we are seeing out of the other Washington,” Harrell said.
