COLUMBIA, S.C. (WSAV) — Alex Murdaugh's attorneys said their client was denied "any semblance" of a fair trial, and his conviction should be overturned.

In a 69-page response to the State of South Carolina's latest brief in Murdaugh's appeal, his legal team said the entire case is built on investigative failures, fabricated evidence and jury tampering.

An excerpt from the brief said:

"The evidence actually shows: A contaminated crime scene with ignored alternative suspect evidence; Fabricated blood spatter testimony that the State abandoned when exposed; Cell phone evidence that supports Alex's innocence; No credible motive for such extreme action; Systematic jury tampering to ensure conviction. Critical forensic evidence lost through investigative malpractice"
