NEW JERSEY (PIX11) -- Renters and landlords take note that broker fees could be expanding to new locations.

In June, a new law took effect in New York City that prohibits brokers who represent landlords from charging broker fees to tenants.

Candidates for office in Hoboken and Jersey City are bringing attention to the idea.

The state of New Jersey may have to be involved and a bill before the legislature that would allow for restrictions on real estate fees charged to tenants in the Garden State.

The New York City FARE (Fairness in Apartment Rental Expenses) Act also applies to brokers who publish listings with the landlord’s permission. All fees must be disclosed in listings and leases.

Broker fees can add up to a month and a half's rent or a percentage of the lease. In New York City
