MARQUETTE, MI – A proposed easement is moving forward to protect 300-plus miles of trails in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.
The proposal covers trails in Marquette County on land owned by Cleveland Cliffs, which has plans to put its property up for sale, said Sven Gonstead, county recreation specialist. The easement would ensure public access to these trails regardless of who owns the land.
The Marquette County Board of Commissioners recently gave the green light for county officials to move forward with the project, which will have no cost for taxpayers, Gonstead said. A formal vote on the easement will come later.
“Our No. 1 goal is to protect what we have, not lose any trails and maintain connectivity,” he said.
The proposed easement touches more than 300 miles of motorized and non-mot
