SCOTTSDALE, AZ (AZFamily) — Standing on traffic medians will be against the law in Scottsdale, effective Thursday.

Under the median safety ordinance, loitering on traffic medians in a 30-mile-per-hour zone or higher will be a class 3 misdemeanor.

Enforcement for a Class 3 misdemeanor can lead to:

30 days in jail

$500 citation

One year probation

Knowing that some may see this ordinance as a way to penalize panhandling among the homeless community, Scottsdale Police Officer Aaron Bolin said it’s meant to enhance safety for everyone.

“The ordinance is not intended to go after any particular group in our community,” Bolin said. “It really is intended to enhance safety for any pedestrians that are using the roadway.”
