ST. THOMAS – Two St. Thomas-area residents are facing multiple charges – including public incitement of hatred – after a swastika was mowed into the front lawn of a home, Ontario Provincial Police say.

The symbol, used by the German Nazi party as its emblem , was cut into the lawn of a Centennial Avenue home just north of Lawton Street on the east edge of St. Thomas in the municipality of Central Elgin. The act sparked condemnation from the community. Police were dispatched on Sept. 12 at about 7:45 a.m. and two people were arrested.

OPP Const. Jeffrey Beaumaster said a contractor later mowed over the lawn, though he wasn’t sure when.

Central Elgin Mayor Andrew Sloan declined to comment on the matter while police are investigating.
