ABILENE, Texas (KTAB/KRBC) – The Paramount Theatre in downtown Abilene is one of the city’s treasures. Today, it officially became a historic treasure with a Texas State Historical Marker now standing at its Cypress Street location.
Numerous Abilenians attended the ceremony and saluted the behind-the-scenes work it took to get this designation from the state. Besides movie showings, the theatre is also home to concerts, operas, and theatrical productions, 162 days’ worth just last year.
The Paramount opened in 1930 during the Depression, and while other downtown theatres like the Queen and the Majestic have long since disappeared, the Paramount survived. The unveiling also honored two Abilenians who were instrumental in saving the theatre from demolition. Executive Director George Levesq
