MARION, Ill. (WSIL) -- Marion Police are encouraging residents and businesses to participate in a new initiative to help solve crimes using doorbell cameras and home surveillance footage.

Police Chief David Fitts said, "This is just another service that helps everybody, not just the police department. It can help all of our citizens as well."

The program, called Marion Safe, is a voluntary security camera registry. It allows police to know where cameras are located without granting them direct access.

"It does not cost you anything, and it does not give us access to your cameras," Fitts said. "It drops us a pen, and that pen stays in-house. No one has access to that except us here at the Marion PD."
