Westpac is set to axe 200 face-to-face roles in a major restructuring move that the industry union has condemned as a "callous and short-sighted" attack on essential banking services.

The Finance Sector Union (FSU) said the job cuts, which will take place over the next year, were an attempt to shed staff under the guise of digital transformation.

The union has called on the bank to redeploy affected workers, saying that face-to-face banking remains a vital service for communities.

FSU National Secretary Julia Angrisano slammed the job cuts, saying that workers "should not be sacrificed for cost-cutting dressed up as innovation."

"Our expectation is clear: no worker should lose their job. We will hold Westpac to account every step of the way," she said.
