CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) - North Carolina lawmakers on Tuesday afternoon passed a bill named after Iryna Zarutska , the Ukrainian woman who was killed on a Charlotte light rail in August.
Zarutska , 23, was stabbed to death on a Charlotte light rail the night of Friday, Aug. 22. The alleged attacker was identified as a man named Decarlos Brown Jr., who was allegedly sitting behind Zarutska on the light rail that night.
The North Carolina House on Tuesday, Sept. 23 passed a bill dubbed “Iryna’s Law” by a vote of 82-30. The bill was reintroduced in response to Zarutska’s death in an effort to push criminal reform in North Carolina.
As of Tuesday, the bill was headed to the desk of North Carolina Gov. Josh Stein. He could sign the bill into law or veto it.
