Roughly an hour and a half after the polls closed, and a neck-and-neck numbers race, Spiro Cheriogotis was voted Mobile’s next mayor, beating Barbara Drummond by more than 1,300 votes.

According to unofficial returns provided by WKRG News 5 at around 8:30, the former Mobile County District Court judge endorsed by Mayor Sandy Stimpson won 24,370 votes. Drummond, the longtime state representative, won 23,006 votes. In all, 47,376 of Mobile’s 157,823 registered voters participated in the election, compared to 41,481 voters who participated in the Aug. 26 general election.
