At least 10 people have been killed, nine of them from electrocution, while Kolkata has been brought to its knees in the wake of torrential overnight rains that lashed the city and its adjoining districts on Tuesday (September 23).
The rains, among the heaviest in four decades, have led to disruptions in air, rail, and road transport, the shutdown of educational institutions, and prompted the state government to advance Puja holidays.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning of heavy showers in the southern and eastern districts of West Bengal over the next 24 hours, attributing the spell to a low-pressure system over the northeastern Bay of Bengal.
