ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. —

The Sunport has made a lot of improvements, and the latest will give some small businesses a chance to take advantage of the many travelers who would like to bring a little bit of New Mexico home with them.

Tuesday was the grand opening for Ascend ABQ Retail Kiosk Program, an initiative years in the making that has created retail spaces at the Sunport where fledgling entrepreneurs can get hands-on experience and mentorship while along with making money.

Gary Gilliard, deputy director of the Sunport, said the program was initiated by Mayor Tim Keller as part of the major transformation of the Sunport into more than just a place for people to board and exit aircraft.

"It's the largest program anywhere in the U.S. airport system, with nine retail spaces," Gilliard said
