BISMARCK — North Dakota data center tenants and operators have saved approximately $40.9 million the past year alone — thanks to a generous state tax exemption policy tailored specifically to them.

"It signals significant movement, and I think it's safe to say that area will continue to grow," said Tax Commissioner Brian Kroshus. "The program is certainly being utilized and the savings are substantial, there’s no question about that."

Since North Dakota has a 5% sales tax, the $40.9 million represents 5% of approximately $818 million worth of equipment purchased by data center entities — from software to cooling systems.

Data centers are not exempt from other taxation, like property tax.
