MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Federal prosecutors are requesting an appeals court to deny a new trial for the three former Memphis Police Department officers charged in the beating death of Tyre Nichols.
This comes after Tadarrius Bean, Justin Smith and Demetrius Haley were granted a new trial following federal judge Mark S. Norris' recusal in the Tyre Nichols case. Their defense attorneys claimed new trials were warranted because the judge had been biased against the defendants throughout the proceedings.
The three officers were set to be sentenced during the week of June 16, 2025, before Norris recused himself the Friday before sentencings were set to begin. Martin and Desmond Mills, another former officer accused in the beating, were originally scheduled to be sentenced the same week, but both
