The southern Sri Lankan city of Galle is known for its colonial architecture and oceanside attitudes.

There are good beaches like Unawatuna, and flora and fauna in Sinharaja Forest Reserve, a daytrip away.

In the city itself, historic Galle Fort is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and the Martin Wickramasinghe Folk Museum Complex gives a glimpse into culture.

And now there’s a new place to stay.

A hotel called Fort Bazaar has opened a new studio called 8 Leyn Baan.

It is set in what was a cluster of historic lawyers’ chambers on Leyn Baan Street. It dates back to the 1600s, but the split-level studio is of contemporary design.

There’s a skylight above the loft-style bedroom. A rattan lampshade drops from the loft to the ground-floor living room.
