India aims to enhance its energy trade with the United States in the coming years, according to Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal. Speaking at an event in New York on September 23, 2025, Goyal highlighted that U.S. involvement will play a crucial role in India's energy security. He stated, "Clearly, the world recognizes that (energy security) is one area where we all have to work together. India is a big player in the energy field… we are big importers of energy from across the world, including from the U.S."

Goyal is currently leading a delegation to discuss a Bilateral Trade Agreement with the U.S. He emphasized that the partnership will ensure price stability and diversify India's energy sources. "Our energy security goals will have a very high element of U.S. involvement, which will help us unlock limitless possibilities with the U.S. on various fronts, energy and beyond," he added.

The minister also mentioned plans for collaboration in nuclear power, stating, "It’s an area that we’ve been talking of for a long time. There were certain elements which needed to be set right." He expressed optimism about supporting private initiatives in nuclear energy.

Goyal raised concerns about the European Union's proposed Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), warning that it could isolate Europe and increase costs. He remarked, "This green protectionism is like a trap in which, if somebody buries his head, he may find it very difficult to come out of the sand."

He also discussed the importance of critical minerals, advocating for resilient supply chains and diversified sources to prevent trade from being weaponized. Goyal concluded by stressing the need for aligned regulatory frameworks to ensure energy security without geopolitical tensions interfering.

The event was attended by various dignitaries, including Member of Parliament Anurag Thakur and officials from the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas.
