The Trump administration's warning that Tylenol use during pregnancy could cause autism came as New York and some other states have pushed back against recent federal health guidance on vaccines.

New York state health officials in a statement to USA TODAY Network on Sept. 23 criticized President Donald Trump and Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. for pushing "irresponsible and scientifically inaccurate" federal guidance on acetaminophen, the generic drug name for Tylenol.

"Autism is a complex disorder that has many contributing factors and there is no conclusive evidence that establishes a direct causal relationship between acetaminophen use during pregnancy and autism," New York health officials said.
