There are no venomous snakes that call Rhode Island home, but the bad news for people with ophidiophobia is there are snakes in Rhode Island that can grow to 8 feet long.
There are 12 snakes native to Rhode Island, according to the Department of Environmental Management.
"Although some species appear menacing and may bite when threatened, snakes are generally much more afraid of you then you are of them, and no native Rhode Island snake poses any threat to life, limb, or property. Native snakes are a natural and important part of healthy ecosystems and are fascinating creatures worth understanding more fully," a DEM phamplet said.
The largest snake in the state is sometimes mistaken for a rattlesnake, but timber rattlesnakes disappeared from Rhode Island about 50 years ago.
