The hills around Kamarkuchi on the outskirts of Guwahati echoed with grief and reverence on Tuesday as thousands gathered to bid farewell to singer Zubeen Garg, who defined an era of Assamese music. His body was cremated with full state honours amid chanting of Vedic hymns, conch shells and moist-eyed tributes from fans, family and dignitaries.
The pyre was lit by Zubeen’s sister, Palme Borthakur, and his protégé, music composer Rahul Gautam. Guided by priests, they went around the pyre seven times before striking the final flame, as slogans of Zubeen, Zubeen and Jai Zubeen da rang out. Many among the crowd broke into his beloved song Mayabini Ratir Buku, turning the last rites into an impromptu chorus of remembrance.
