Mickey Mouse is in the house.

An extremely rare Disney artifact, one of only four known to exist in the world, is on display at the Akron History Center at 172 S. Main St.

It’s a gas mask that resembles Mickey Mouse. Akron artist Dietrich Rempel, a Russian immigrant, designed the children’s mask during World War II for the Sun Rubber Co. of Barberton.

The museum unveiled the exhibit Sept. 22 with an invitation-only ceremony at the Knight Stage honoring Sandra Smith, the widow of Sun President and CEO Richey Smith.

She donated the mask to the Summit County Historical Society following her husband’s death in 2022 at age 88 . The object had been in their personal collection of Sun memorabilia.
