The City of Hamilton will offer a compassionate grant of up to $2,000 for residents impacted by flooding, following a “significant” water-main break in Ward 4 .

Councillors approved a motion by Ward 4 councillor Tammy Hwang to provide the grant on Wednesday, following a Sept. 8 break that flooded basements and damaged homes near the intersection of Grace Avenue and Dunn Avenue — the second in that area in seven years.

The east-end councillor said the recent break, which happened after 2 a.m., left residents with up to two feet of water in their basements — causing them to rush to save furniture, electronics and personal belongings.

“This was not a normal flood, this was not a normal water-main break,” she said. “This was a significant water-main break.”
