In the hours before Oklahoma State University made its announcement, readers of The Oklahoman signaled their approval of the decision to replace Mike Gundy as the school's football coach.

In a survey launched early on Tuesday, Sept. 23, and suspended in mid-afternoon when OSU called a news conference, 74% of the readers who voted said it was time for Gundy to go.

"I appreciate everything he has done for OSU, but I believe the game has passed him by. It is time to find a new coach," said Gary Brownlee, of Oklahoma City.

The Cowboys' season started badly.

The Oklahoman's sports columnist Joe Mussatto had said the handwriting was on the wall signaling an early departure for the longtime coach.

However, The Oklahoman's Scott Wright reported that Gundy hoped to stick it out.
