Drivers are set to be slapped with a £5 daily cost next month as a UK city launches a new congestion charge . Oxford’s congestion charge is going to come in earlier than expected after Oxfordshire County Council announced its start date.

The temporary scheme was approved by the council’s cabinet at a meeting on September 10 with the aim that it would be introduced no later than November 10. The county council has now said the scheme will start Wednesday, October 29.

Councillor Andrew Gant, Oxfordshire County Council's Cabinet Member for Transport Management, said the city needed to slash the number of vehicles on the road in order to "thrive".
