BLANTYRE, Malawi (AP) — President Lazarus Chakwera conceded defeat Wednesday in Malawi’s elections with former leader Peter Mutharika on course for victory.

Chakwera said in a speech on national television that he had spoken with Mutharika to congratulate him. He said he considered Mutharika the “presumptive winner” of the southern African nation’s presidential election.

Mutharika, 85, was previously Malawi president from 2014 to 2020. He received more than 60% of the vote when partial results were announced on Monday night.
