The Greater Cleveland RTA has been planning for years to buy new rail cars, and consolidate light and heavy rail operations to use the same cars on the Red, Green, Blue and Waterfront lines.
That’s because the cars they’re currently using are about 40 years old. They’ve lived beyond their expected lifespan, leading to increased maintenance time and costs.
But tariffs under President Donald Trump are impeding that plan.
The RTA budgeted $5.17 million to design and build each car. Now, each car is slated to cost about $6 million.
So instead of 60 total cars, the RTA right now can afford only 54.
