John Aubrey, who served as sheriff of Jefferson County for more than a quarter century, has died, according to Attorney General Russell Coleman. He was 86.

Aubrey was the county's longest-serving sheriff after first taking office in 1999. He announced in March 2025 he would not seek reelection in 2026. Earlier in the year he was named sheriff of the year by the National Sheriffs' Association, an organization he led in 2014-15 .
