Algoma District School Board is starting the new academic year with nearly 10,600 students in its classrooms.

The English public board has 6,940 elementary and 3,633 secondary students. The 10,573 students is 428 more than projected in the spring by director of education Lucia Reece.

The additional students are “pretty well-distributed” among the board’s schools and regions, superintendent of education Frank Palumbo told The Sault Star following the open portion of a board of trustees meeting on Tuesday. The additional students are drawn from domestic youngsters new to Sault Ste. Marie and Algoma District, kindergarten students starting their studies and drawn from other provinces and countries, including France.
