SOUTH BEND, Ind. (WNDU) - A man’s body was pulled from the St. Joseph River on Wednesday morning by first responders in downtown South Bend.

Just after 7 a.m., the South Bend Fire Department responded to a water rescue call on E. Colfax Avenue. When they arrived, a nearby tenant reported they heard yelling and spotted a man in the water just behind the building.

With help from the tenant, SBFD’s swiftwater personnel were able to find the victim. The victim, a man believed to be in his 40s or 50s, died at the scene.

Officials say fishing gear was found nearby.

The Indiana Department of Natural Resources is handling the investigation.
