Runners across the world hoping to take part in next year's Boston Marathon are either celebrating or grappling with disappointment after the Boston Athletic Association made the race steeped in history and prestige even tougher to qualify for.

The B.A.A. began notifying applicants on Tuesday of their acceptance into the 130th Boston Marathon that will be run on Monday, April 20, 2026. The qualifying standards were quickened by 4 minutes and 34 seconds for runners' genders and ages.

There were a total of 33,249 qualifier applications received during registration week (Sept. 8-12), the B.A.A. said.

Email notices to athletes accepted and not accepted will continue through the coming days, according to the B.A.A
