The Nelson County Sheriff’s Office is set to purchase a dozen new automated external defibrillators (AED), one for each deputy within the patrol division who regularly arrive first on scenes of emergencies, which will allow them to provide life-saving measures.

The Nelson County Board of Supervisors recently voted to contribute $4,350 in a local match for the purchase of the AEDs at a cost of $8,700.

An AED is a portable medical device that analyzes a person's heart rhythm and delivers an electric shock if needed to restore a normal heartbeat, saving lives by treating sudden cardiac arrest outside a hospital. Sheriff Mark Embrey said the sheriff’s office is a recipient of the Rescue Squad Assistance Fund Grant Award made available through the Office of Emergency Medical Services.
